When should you start booking summer entertainment?

Cherry Hill is one of the best towns in Camden County for backyard parties. Most neighborhoods have decent-sized yards with established tree cover, and there are solid park options if your yard is too small. But summer in South Jersey fills up fast, and if you wait until June to start planning, your first-choice entertainment and dates may already be gone.

Now. If you're reading this in March or April, you're in the ideal booking window for summer 2026. Most mobile entertainment companies (foam parties, bounce houses, game trucks, face painters) book on a first-come basis. Weekends in June and July go first.

Here's a general timeline that works:

  • 8 to 12 weeks out: Book your entertainment. Confirm the date, time, and deposit.
  • 4 to 6 weeks out: Send invitations. For summer parties, give parents at least three weeks to RSVP since families travel more in summer.
  • 2 weeks out: Finalize your headcount. Order cake, plan food, buy supplies.
  • Day before: Set up anything you can in advance (decorations, tables, chairs). Check the weather forecast.

For a foam cannon party, we recommend booking three to four weeks ahead at minimum, but earlier is better for peak summer weekends.

How does Cherry Hill weather affect party planning?

South Jersey summers are hot and humid. July and August daytime temperatures regularly hit the low 90s, and humidity makes it feel hotter. This is actually good news if you're planning a water-based party, since kids will welcome anything that gets them wet.

The bigger concern is afternoon thunderstorms. South Jersey gets pop-up storms throughout the summer, often between 2:00 and 5:00 PM. This doesn't mean you should avoid afternoon parties. It means you should have a weather plan.

A few options:

  • Set up a canopy or pop-up tent for a shaded food and seating area. Even if it doesn't rain, your guests will appreciate shade.
  • Have an indoor backup for the food portion. Serve cake inside, keep the entertainment outside.
  • Choose entertainment with a reschedule policy. At Party Foam, we monitor the weather and work with you on rescheduling if conditions are unsafe. A light drizzle is usually fine. Thunderstorms mean we reschedule.

Morning parties (10:00 AM to noon) tend to have the best weather in summer. If you can be flexible on timing, mornings are a smart move.

Best entertainment options for Cherry Hill summer parties

Cherry Hill families have a lot of choices. Here are the options that work best for backyard parties in the area.

Foam cannon party: A foam party is a strong fit for Cherry Hill backyards. Most yards in neighborhoods around Croft Farm, Challenge Grove Park, and the Kingston Estates area have enough space for a full setup (you need about 15 by 15 feet of flat area). An operator handles everything from setup to cleanup, and the foam is safe, hypoallergenic, and disappears on its own within 30 minutes. Foam works for ages 2 through adult. Starting price is $495 for a one-hour session.

Bounce house rental: A classic for a reason. Bounce house rentals in the Cherry Hill area run $200 to $400 for a day. You'll need a flat section of yard, access to a power outlet, and dedicated adult supervision. The main drawback is that bounce houses work best for a narrow age range (roughly 4 to 10) and require someone watching at all times. For a detailed comparison, check out our post on foam parties vs bounce houses.

Backyard movie night: Cherry Hill's tree-lined yards are great for outdoor movie setups once the sun goes down. You'll need a projector, a screen or white sheet, and a speaker. This works best for late summer birthdays (August and September) when sunset comes earlier.

Park party at Challenge Grove: If your yard is too small, Challenge Grove Park on Bortons Road is a popular party spot. It's home to Jake's Place, a large inclusive playground, and has pavilion space, open fields, and plenty of parking. Cooper River Park is another option with walking paths, open green space, and a restaurant on the north side.

How many kids should you invite?

This depends on your child's age and your yard size, but here's a rule of thumb: your child's age plus two or three is a reasonable guest count for younger kids. A five-year-old's party with seven or eight kids is plenty. For older kids (ages 8 and up), 12 to 15 is a comfortable number for most Cherry Hill backyards.

More kids means more food, more supervision, and more noise. It does not always mean more fun. Some of the best parties we've worked are groups of 10 to 12 kids who all know each other and spend the entire time in the foam together.

What should parents tell guests to bring?

If your party involves water (foam, sprinklers, water balloons), put it on the invitation. Tell parents to send their kids in swimsuits or play clothes they don't mind getting wet, with water shoes or old sneakers, a towel, and a change of dry clothes.

Sunscreen is a must. Remind parents to apply it before the party. Reapplying once kids are covered in foam or water is not practical.
